As said down below, he looked old when he bossed Oxford in the 80s, he oversaw a good side there too with Aldridge, Houghten etc. Overall he had a great career.

I was at that match and it was one of my favourite ever away matches. I recall that fellow Hammers were all over the ground but I was in the side stand with the official away support.

Built a decent side at Derby, he was a good manager.
Asanovic, Sturridge, Eranio and Bilic.
Didn’t realise he was as old at 79 but to be fair he looked old even in the Panini sticker books I had as a kid in the mid 80s.

A good manager and nice bloke. There aren’t many of them left now. John Lyall, Bobby Robson, all gone.

Good manager, and very decent bloke. He is the other manager mentioned and thanked by Alex Ferguson on page 1 of his autobiography, second to John Lyall.

Remembered fondly on the South Coast. Had a good team at Portsmouth in the early 90s when I was living down that way. Paul Walsh, Kit Symons, Darren Anderton etc. Good Cup runs in addition to the promotion chase when we edged them.

My main memory of Jim smith was his commentary when west ham beat Swindon on penultimate day of season in 93, scoring enough goals in the process to jump ahead of his pompey side.
When Kenny brown scored the vital 3rd
"And where was the Swindon marking, they were all over the shop, all over the shop'. You could hear the hope draining out of him.
